Dress for Success
TOTAL TIME NEEDED
Dressing appropriately for different situations; creativity; self-confidence
There’s a time and a place for every outfit, but does our emerging adult know the difference? Assemble a box of clothing containing a variety of clothing items, including some pieces that might stretch the imagination of even the savviest fashion designers! Then provide the emerging adult with the scenario of an activity he or she must attend. Have the emerging adult model the chosen outfit and describe why it was selected. Repeat with several different scenarios. You can use an American Idol-type panel to evaluate the ensembles for each scenario, providing feedback and color commentary from your own experiences for everyone’s entertainment. As an example, here are the scenarios we provided for one of our children: prom; meeting significant other’s parents for the first time; a company dinner party; a job interview.
Large basket of clothing with lots of options, including appropriate and not-so-appropriate choices
Invite members of the coming-of-age team to play American Idol judges – think Simon, Randy and J-Lo! The final dressing scenario leads perfectly into a Job Interview challenge.
